W Stationers' Register z 1580 roku jest zapisana ballada A new Northern Dittye of the Lady Green-Sleeves autorstwa Richarda Jonesa. Najstarsza wersja słów pochodzi z A Handful of Pleasant Delights z 1584 roku. Melodia została po raz pierwszy opublikowana w 1652 roku. Legenda głosi, że wiersz ten napisał Henryk VIII dla Anny Boleyn około 1530 roku. Nigdy nie zostało to potwierdzone i prawdopodobnie wcale tak nie było :) Istnieje niezliczona ilość wersji zarówno melodii jak i słów, samych zwrotek znaleźć można kilkadziesiąt, ale najbardziej znane są te cztery, które można przeczytać obok.
