answer by Lin Sherman:

I discovered a pair of Times New Roman TrueType fonts that between them contain all the accented characters you need for Welsh:

I don't know if they came with MSWord, Win95, or something else lurking in my system. To access these special characters from MSWord for Win95:

  1. Put the insertion point where you want to type the character.
  2. Pull down the "Insert" menu.
  3. Select "Symbol..."--this brings up a dialog box.
  4. Choose one of the above fonts.
  5. Double-click on the desired character.

A faster approach is to define "shortcut keys" for these characters. The technique for doing this is follow do steps above, then...

  1. Single-click on the desired character.
  2. Click on the "Shortcut Key..." button.
  3. Enter the key combination you want to use.

Once you've defined a shortcut key, you can type the desired character by using the shortcut key sequence rather than using the menu and dialog boxes.

If you use these in conjunction with Times New Roman for the remaining letters, they work fine. The only problem is that if you have line spacing set to "auto", they cause the line height to increase. You can enforce a uniform height by setting the line height to "exactly" in the Format Paragraph dialog.

9.3 "Memorabilia"

9.3.1 Could anyone please help me in locating merchants who carry Welsh and/or Celtic memorabilia such as t-shirts, coffee cups, flags, neckties, etc.

answer from Robert Bottomley

I don't know of any places on-line, but here are a few to try:

Celtic Alternatives
838 Elgin Ave., 1F
Forest Park,
IL 60130-2027
708-771-7309
Harp and Dragon
25 Madison St., Dept. N
Cortland,
NY 13045
607-756-7372

They both have lots of Welsh "stuff" (flags, pins, books, music, dishes, etc.).

Ateb gan/answer from Dave Hughes, Colorado:

I have had great success with the David Morgan company near Seattle (which, however, I found on a product page in Wales). They specialize in Welsh, Irish, Scottish stuff, with some Australian tossed in (the owner is Welsh, his wife is Australian).

Ateb gan/answer from Valerie:

Pembrokeshire Craftsmen's Shop, Brychan Yard, Upper Frog St, Tenby, is a co-operative run by craftsmen, selling goods made of wood and leather, silver jewellery, wooden toys, pottery and Celtic artwork.

9.3.2 Is there a Welsh kilt?

answers from Stephan Stockton / Dafydd Tomos

No kilt is a traditional item of Welsh dress. However, kilts are now made in Wales. Edwina Williams Jones makes kilts. She is based at Chapter Arts Centre in Cardiff. They cost around 100 pounds but are well worth it and Edwina makes them to fit.

Her company is called Gad y Gwlân and they are "makers of Welsh kilts, warm jackets, fleece hats and other groovy Welsh wool clothes".
